    How to Protect Your Computer!

Your computer needs to be protected from viruses, hacker attacks, and from annoying popups (for more on popups, see "Get Rid of Spyware" below).

  • Here are some tools that Intermountain Computer recommends you use to help protect your Windows PC from viruses, hackers, and annoying pop-ups.

Remember, never open an email attachment you didn't already know was coming to you. If you do get sent an email with an attachment, just call or send a polite email to ask whoever sent it to you what the attachment is. If they don't know about the e-mail, delete it completely -- ASAP.

Understand that banks, financial institutions, and large companies will never ask for personal financial information via e-mail. Financial transactions over the Web are safe, but don't use links in e-mail... Instead open your browser, and enter the URL yourself. This way you can be sure you are at your bank's actual Web site.

Also, look for the "locked" padlock icon at the bottom of your browser before completing any financial transaction. The "locked" icon means the information you send is encrypted and can't be intercepted by others along the way. For a financially secure site, the address in your location bar should begin https://www... (instead of just http://www...).

    Here are our recommendations:

  • Anti-Virus Protection: Eliminates viruses, and keeps them from infecting your computer in the future:

  •           Intermountain Computer recommends McAfee antivirus software.

  • Firewall: Blocks hackers from attacking or controling your PC:

  •      Intermountain Computer recommends a hardware firewall. These often come included with a router, which would allow you to share your Internet connection among several computers. Contact us for help setting up your home network!

  • Free Pop-up Ads Blocker: Blocks nearly all popups from appearing on your computer, slowing it down and annoying you. Plus the Google Toolbar helps you search the Internet quickly and effectively (read more about Google here).

  •      Google Tool Bar: Download free from the Google Web site.

  • Spyware Removal Tools:

Spybot Search & Destroy: Review and Free Download.

  •      Lavasoft Adaware: Review and Free Download.

         Download Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware.
