Finding Things on the Internet
Internet users and experts agree that the best search engine you can use to find things on the Internet is Google.
Google works well with just typing in a couple words and seeing what comes up. But here's a few tricks that pros use to always find whatever they're looking for...
When searching for a phrase made up of two or more common words try putting the phrase inside quotes -- "Duck Soup" or "Richfield Mall."
When a Web site doesn't have its own search engine, or you just want to get there faster, try searching with the operator 'site:' followed by the end of the web address -- site:amazon.com "ten poems that will last a lifetime" --or-- site:utah.gov utah water regulations.
Also, when you find a Web page you want but it won't pull up, or you just want help finding the part you're searching for, click the 'cached' link next to the results. It will show you an older version of the page which Google has stored in its memory, with the parts you're searching for highlighted!
Google offers lots of specialty searches also, most of which work quite well, including:
Of course, Microsoft is striking back with a newly updated search engine of their own at MSN. It also includes a news and image search of its own, along with a free search of an online version of the Microsoft encyclopedia, Encarta. Pretty handy!
Last but not least, when you are looking for a web site that used to be on the Web years ago, try the Wayback Machine! For example, you can browse the Cool Web Sites of 1996!
Happy searching... and finding!
